One of the Pacific Northwest’s renowned pilots was Silas Christopherson (1890-1915). He was the first man to cross the Columbia and Willamette rivers in an airplane and he did so in grand style, taking off from a 170 ft. ramp built on the roof of the historic Multnomah Hotel in Portland in front of 50,000 spectators.
